Kilgore at Tyler meet today
after finishing second in Eustace
Kilgore High School cross country will compete in Tyler today after both boys and girls teams finished second in the Eustace High School-sponsored Do It For Dom Invitational last weekend.
Kilgore was to run today in the Tyler Legacy Cross Country Invitational at the University of Texas at Tyler, early this morning. After that, there’s only one more meet – Lindale’s Eagle Invitational next Thursday – before the district meet on Oct. 12 at Lear Park in Longview.
The ultimate goal for Kilgore runners would be to compete at the state meet, which has been attained a few times in recent years by boys and girls runners here since Clayton Fletcher got KHS back to state in the 2014 meet. The University Interscholastic League’s state meet is ran each year at Old Settlers Park in Round Rock, and this year it’s set for Friday, Nov. 4 (Classes 4A, 6A and 2A) and Saturday, Nov. 5 (Classes 3A, 5A and 1A).
At Eustace, Ruby Almanza finished first and Danna Requena second for coach Todd BonDurant’s Lady Bulldogs, and Josue Rosas finished sixth overall for the ‘Dogs in the boys division, as both Kilgore teams took second place to host team Eustace at the meet. Rosas ran the boys distance in 18 minutes, 01.94 seconds; Almanza’s girls time was 12:52.46, and Requena’s in just slightly over that in 12:55.28.
Checking in after Almanza and Requena for Kilgore (although place numbers weren’t listed) were Maci McNew (13:54.14), Aliyah Veloz (14:02.28), Lexi Lara (14:38.20), and Gemma Sanchez (15:07.60). Eustace’s girls finished with 49 points; Kilgore was second with 57.
For Kilgore’s boys after Rosas, Jorge Aleman (18:20.79) and Zachery Gutierrez (18:24.41) finished back-to-back, and Luciano Brizuela (18:34.27) was two places later, although again, no place numbers were actually listed. Teammate Gustavo Trejo checked in four places after that (18:58.68), and also finishing for Kilgore were Rodnel Caster (19:19.28) and Guillermo Mireles (19:56.34).
Kilgore’s boys finished with 49 points; Eustace was first with 19.
Sabine off this weekend after
Both Sabine High School cross country teams finished fifth in Jacksonville’s Indian Express Invitational last weekend, and will take this weekend off before joining Kilgore and other programs in Lindale for the Eagle Invitational on Thursday.
Daynne Trevino led coach Jason Heffner’s Sabine teams, finishing the girls’ two-mile race in 14:41, and earning eighth overall for SHS. Emma Logan (15:41) was third. Freshman Sadie Loftis (15:51) was 27th. Autumn Mosley (16:34), also a freshman, came in 33rd. Flor Garcia was 34th, Greta Chubboy 39th and Kooper Bogenschutz was 4nd.
For the Cardinals, Kevin Maldonado had the best time, finishing ninth overall in the 3.1-mile run (18:55). Bryce Pobuda (20:23), a freshman, was 25th. Francisco Perez was 28th (20:45), Matthew Howland was 31st (20:56), Ashton Stephens was 32nd and Robert Chubboy was 41st.
Kelsey Roys led the junior varsity girls to a seventh-place finish (her time was 16:49); teammates Katherine Mendez and Aubrey Powers helped by placing 28 and 41, respectively. Yael Acosta was the best finisher for the JV boys team (22:16), followed by Trent Francisco, Randy Rodriguez, Camden Childress and Shawn Allen.
A sporting clays tournament that is one of the biggest fundraisers of the year for the Hi-Steppers is coming up on Saturday morning, Oct. 15 at Prairie Creek Sporting Clays.
It’s a four-man team event, and the team entry fee is $400, but for individuals, it’s $100, and that does include a mulligan for each person.
Registration begins at 8 a.m. the morning of, but pre-registration is available. There’s a safety meeting at 8:20, and a shotgun start will follow at 8:30. Breakfast and lunch will be provided for competitors, and sponsorships are still available.

Kilgore High School’s volleyball program will host a mini-camp for girls in kindergarten through fifth grade and for Kilgore Middle School volleyball players at the Kilgore High School gym on Saturday, Oct. 15, from 9 a.m. until noon.
Registration is $40, and that includes a T-shirt and a snack.
To guarantee a shirt, though, you’re asked to please register by Sept. 23. Same-day registration will be available, but extra shirts and sizes are first-come, first-served.
